A side bud of pale yellow hybrid peony 'Prairie Moon' blooms after a spring rain shower, alongside the ripening seedpod of this stem's central flower. Although hybrid peonies typically don't have side buds (that's more of a lactiflora thing...), Prairie Moon's side buds make for an enduring and endearing bloom season. Although the side bud flowers are smalle than the central bloom, these miniatures are beautiful in their own right.

Peonies are magical, and I have found them to be most inspiriing photography subjects. We owned a peony farm in Indiana for 10 years, during which time I took thousands of pictures. These are a few of the best, most joyful and poignant photographs.
